The Federal Recognition Task Force was established to address the interests of all tribes, both federally and non-federally recognized, on any recommended changes to policies, procedures, or strategic plans in the federal recognition process. The Task Force will continue work on implementation of the current proposals from the Department of the Interior to modify the federal acknowledgment process.

DEPT INTERIOR FUNDING – TRIBAL RECOGNITION

FY 2017 Interior appropriations bill once again includes a recognition rider.  The House Appropriations Committee approved the bill by a vote of 31-18 on June 15, 2016.

GENERAL PROVISIONS, DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR TRIBAL RECOGNITION

SEC. 125. None of the funds made available by this or any other Act may be used by the Secretary of the Interior to implement, administer, or enforce the final rule entitled ‘‘Federal Acknowledgment of American Indian Tribes’’ published by the Department of the Interior in the Federal Register on July 1, 2015 (80 Fed. Reg. 37862 et seq.).
