On This Day: In 1990 the Native American Language Act (PUBLIC LAW 101-477) was passed. Prior to the passage of the Act, under certain circumstances Native Americans were denied the right to speak their own language. The Act encourages Native American languages to be integrated into education curriculums, allows for exceptions in teacher certification requirements, supports the preservation of Native American languages, and states that the right of Native Americans to express themselves through the use of Native American languages shall not be restricted in any public proceeding, including publicly supported education programs
